UN Day
We had an incredible UN Day today! It was wonderful to see the students in
national dress and to have families go through the classrooms together to complete
the peace-themed crafts. The singing was so
lovely that many of us even welled up with tears!
New Writing Unit
The students have finished their small
moment writing unit and are now sharing their opinions in our persuasive
unit. The students have learned how to
format a letter and have been writing passionately about a variety of topics
from the Indonesian haze situation to the importance of good sportsmanship on the
football field. This week the students
learned to convince their reader by clearly stating their opinion, giving ample
supporting reasons, adding details and examples, and replacing mundane
words for more interesting, “sparkly" words.
Raz Kids
I am pleased to see how many students are
utilizing our new Raz Kids digital reading program. The reports show that some students have
already read over 6 hours! In case you
have not downloaded the free app yet, it is compatible with computers, iPads/tablets,
and even smartphones. (Please note that the iPad format seems to be the most visually appealing.) As a parent pointed out,
it can put downtime, such as car rides, to better use! Please feel free to have your child use Raz Kids in lieu of the books taken home for the reading log at any time.
Mathematics
The students really enjoyed learning about probability. Most of the students had very little prior knowledge, but found that learning about and testing the odds of something happening was quite fun! Many of the students made a Popplet thinking of events as being likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible, which can be viewed in their digital learning journal. We will revisit probability periodically, but will shift our focus to money. The students will become more familiar with the value of Singaporean coins and work to make screencasts that highlight using their skip counting skills to efficiently count money.
